what to do about filters?bio wheel penguin?
ok i have 2 30 gallon tanks. i have a goldfish tank with 2 goldfish with a double sided filter. it looks like a penguin filter because it has a bio-wheel. it came with my other 30 gallon tank that i got from someone. i have a bio wheel 150 penguin in this one thats for a 30 gallon tank. the one in the goldfish tank is for 55-75 i think. in getting a 55 gallon tank soon and i have to buy a filter for it. shopuld i leave that filter with the goldfish sense their messy? or should i just buy a new 350 bio wheel penguin filter for the 55 gallon? thew thing is that its $43 and the 150 is like $35. but i dont wanna put one thats for 30 gallons for goldfish cause i dont know if thats enough. what should i do??thanks!!
In buying filters, if you plan to keep those two 30 gallon tanks running, then you’re going to have to buy another filter, if you are planning on stopping one of those tanks especially the one with penguin 150, you are going to need a bigger filter.
You are still going to have to cycle the 55 gallon tank, I prefer a canister filter for the 55 gallon tank. However, I suggest to get a bigger filter than recommended for the 55 gallon tank because the numbers on the box that states for aquariums up to 55 gallons etc. etc. etc. is based on the calculations and the experiments that they’ve had. However, the reason why I suggest a filter that is bigger than the recommended is because your filtration will be more efficient, and it will be easier for you to maintain.
If you shut down one of the tanks for example, you can use that filter and buy a 350 bio wheel penguin filter and run those 2 filters, and do not clean the filter coming from the other tank, unless you plan to choose a saltwater set up. The reason for this is because the filter from the tank you stopped, has necessary bacteria housed inside the filter media, with this, it can speed up the cycling of your tank.
Besides, this would be a plus for you, when you change water from your tank, and you have 2 filters, you can clean one of the filters out while conducting water changes. They say never clean filters out while doing a water change, this refers to if you only have one filter, but if you have 2 filters, you may clean one of them.
