Which types of Tetra fishes are easy to breed in an aquarium?

The smaller characins, of which tetras belong to, can be easily bred provided that you keep them in soft acidic water. That being said, I have bred my beacon tetras (or head and tail light tetras) in very hard water with a high pH. Most prefer a well planted tank and remember that the eggs are usually light sensitive, and so will disinegrate. Many will eat their own eggs, so it’s advisable to remove the parents fairly quickly. My tetras didn’t have a chance because they are in a community aquarium, and the eggs were getting eaten about as soon as they were released. As for ease of breeding, here’s a few that may get you started: Nematobrycon palmeri (emperor tetra), Hemigrammus pulcher (Pretty tetra), Hemigrammus erythrozonnus (glowlight tetra), Megalamphodus megalopterus (black phantom tetra). Unfortunately, neons and bleeding heart tetras can be difficult to breed in captivity, at least according to literature. I’ve personally never tried it. I never do encourage my tetras to breed, but it’s amazing what a large water change will do to encourage it. As for some other characins that are not tetras but you still might want to try: Copeina guttata (Red-spotted copeina), Lepidarchus adonis (Adonis), Prionobrama filigera (glass bloodfin).
