There’s a certain calming effect in watching a fish swim by slowly. Most people find it very relaxing to just watch fishes as they calmly go about their business without care. For this reason, certain people like keeping fish tanks at home. However, fish tanks may also be a source of great upset if left untended. Far from the popular notion that fish are just there to swim and be fed, there is quite a bit of effort in keeping them alive inside their tanks. There is such a thing as keeping oxygen levels in the water and maintaining a slight current inside the tank. Diversifying a fish tank may also be trickier than one might think as not all fish may be put in the same enclosure together. Each fish type has its own particular behaviour and this will be the basis of the balance of their world inside that limited sea of theirs and how the fish tank is maintained will determine the fishes’ stress level and lifespan.

Different sizes require different equipment. One of the most important would be the air compressor. This machine pumps air continuously into the tank, keeping oxygen content at a balance and at the same time maintaining a small but significant current inside the tank. This machine is usually comes with plastic tubes which can be run through filters and placed at the bottom of the tank. Bigger tanks need more powerful air compressors to go against pressure build-up inside the tank. For fish tanks exceeding geometric volumes of 20in x 36in x 20in, a separate pump to keep the current going near the surface of the water is usually required.

Another vital fish tank equipment will be water filters. With mechanisms usually connected to the air compressor, this pumps water from the fish tank into filters which catch impurities from the tank before letting it back into the tank, usually also helping with the tank current.

Most fishes are also photosensitive. Light sources from outside the tank are important and must be maintained. Light bulb mounts are available for almost all tank sizes, these mostly being fluorescent light fixtures mountable from the open top end of the tank. The light will also supply a certain degree of warmth into the water so it is important to select the correct type of wattage for the bulb. Keep proper distance between the light bulb and the water surface to avoid accidental electrocution.

Ornaments for fish tanks are available in pet shops in various themes and styles, from base covering sand or pebbles, plant ornaments to shells and plastic floating devices, there are fish tank accessories to match your taste.
